What to Wear for Family Photos Without Stressing

Booking family photos should feel exciting, not stressful. But I know one of the first questions that pops up after you book is: “What am I going to we wear?” Trust me, you’re not alone! Coordinating outfits, especially for the whole crew, can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are my favorite tips for choosing outfits that look amazing in photos while keeping things simple for you.

1. Start With a Color Palette

Instead of everyone wearing the same thing, choose 2–3 main colors and let each person’s outfit pull from that palette. Think royal blue, white, and burgundy for fall, or pink, white, and denim for spring. This creates a coordinated look without being too matchy.

2. Avoid Loud Patterns

Depending on the look you are going for, plaids, stripes, and bold logos can be distracting. A little pattern is fine (like mom’s floral dress or a child’s polka-dot bow), but balance it with solid colors around it so the focus stays on your faces not the clothes.

3. Think Comfort First

If the kids are uncomfortable, they will cut up! It will show in the photos too. Choose clothes they can move and play in. Same for adults. Skip the outfits that you have to constantly adjust. When you feel comfortable, you’ll look more relaxed and natural.

4. Add Layers and Textures

Cardigans, scarves, denim jackets, or a textured sweater photograph beautifully. TRUST ME. Layers also give us options during the session. Sometimes just taking off or adding a jacket can create a whole new look.

5. Don’t Forget Shoes!

Yes, shoes will show in some photos! Neutral shoes (like brown boots or simple flats) usually work best. Try to avoid bright sneakers or flip-flops unless that’s the exact vibe you want.

6. Be Yourself

At the end of the day, these photos are about you and your family. If you’re a jeans and t-shirt crew, then rock it, honey! If you love dressing up, go all out. The best photos happen when you feel like yourselves.

Bonus Tip: Once you book with me, you’re not on your own. I’m always happy to help you plan outfits or even send me pics of what you’re considering. We’ll make sure you look coordinated and camera ready without the stress.

Because at the end of the day, your photos should feel like you and that’s what makes them timeless.
